1/2 and 1/2 Value Drawing
For this exercise, you will draw portions of a black-and-white image to practice building value.

- Select a black-and-white image that interests you and print it.
- Cut off the white space around the image
- Trace the whole outer edge of the photo onto your paper. This will help you line up your pieces after you cut it.
- Cut the image: You can decide whether you cut the image in half or into thirds.
- Select the areas you want to draw and the areas you plan to keep as is. You must select the more challenging areas to draw for full points.
- Glue down the portions of the image you plan to not draw and keep the portions that you plan to draw separate. Make sure you line up the edges of the image along the outline on the paper so that it fits together proportionally.
- Looking at the pieces you set aside, start drawing a contour line drawing to establish your proportions. You must look at the pieces you set aside to get the proportions right.
- Lastly, start adding value. Remember, the more value you add the more realistic it will look. Match the values as close as possible to the original image to fool the viewer's eye into seeing the whole piece as one image.
